A house becomes a home when it gets a personal touch from its occupants. A house is merely a cluster of four walls. It becomes a home with people and the things they like to live with. These could be their own, rented or borrowed. No home is complete without furniture. Furniture is a term used for a wide range of objects that support and give rest to the human body, besides providing space for storage. Made out of natural products like wood, cane or bamboo; or man made materials like steel or plastic, it can be simple and functional; or artistic, ornate and aesthetically appealing.

Furniture has been used since time immemorial, perhaps since the end of the Stone Age. Today, furniture adorns the richest and poorest of homes, varying only in quantity and quality. Furniture loosely refers to beds, chairs, sofas and tables, cabinets and wardrobes, stools and stands. It is used everywhere, in offices and commercials centers just as much as it is used at home.

The simplest furniture can be carved out of any type of wood or bamboo or woven out of cane. But modern trends and the need for durable products has led to the use of tough strong woods like teak, mahogany and rosewood, to be used to make various pieces of furniture. This furniture is strong and beautiful at the same time, but extremely expensive as well. Cheaper varieties of wood are frequently used and these become more affordable for the common man. The use of prefabricated wood and plywood has transformed the furniture manufacturing business. Plastic and steel are also being used for durable, practical furniture, the former being the preferred material for outdoor furniture.

There was a time, when each piece of furniture was a work of art, meticulously designed and painstakingly carved out of solid blocks of wood that would take weeks or months to complete. But those days are long gone, and while a very small percentage of furniture is still produced in this manner, the majority of furniture is now mass-produced in factories with computer-aided design and machines that can cut and assemble at speeds far beyond human capacities. The end products are also standardized, flawless and identical to the specifications.

Choosing furniture for the home or office depends upon the design and layout of the home. Its placement, usage and afford ability are other deciding factors. People often take professional advice for the interior designing of the house, and accordingly select pieces of furniture. Modern day users prefer coordinated colors, straight lines and comfort and functionality more than aesthetic appeal and artistic custom-made products. Choice of furniture is purely subjective with no concept of good, bad or best – what appeals naturally becomes the best.
