Have you taken a nap on a quiet Sunday afternoon only to be awakened by the phone? You realize you have loss tract of time and do not know what day or time it is. On the way the clock says 4 P.M. and you realize it is not morning it is afternoon. The clock saved you, by the time you reach the phone you can carry on an intelligent conversation. You lost tract of time for that brief moment, but what if we did not have time? In ancient times they would not know what 4 P.M. was.

Jesus used the term “before the cock crows twice” to describe the time of day to his Apostles. You wonder what other terms that they used to describe time. Time can be told by the position of the sun in the sky but this is not accurate. I suppose in those days people got up with the sun and retired when it went down, since they had no lights. Maybe instincts played a part in this. My dogs know when it is 10 P.M. time for bed, and 7 A.M. time to rise. They know when it time for me to come home from work.

If we take the word time out of our vocabulary we would be lost. We could no longer go to the mall in 15 minutes, have the plane arrive in 15 minutes, have our car go 50 miles per hour, have the orchestra play their music at 68 beats per minute, and the list could go on. So many of the things we need or enjoy need the use of time.

While time can make our lives hurried and frustrated, we can be thankful that we live in an age that we can enjoy it. We can enjoy the many sophisticated timepieces of today and at a very reasonable price. It is easy now to find a nice looking wristwatch with all the accessories for $25. Our end tables become cluttered, but we can get beautiful wooden wall clocks that fit most any décor for under $50. There are clocks now called atomic clocks where the time is controlled by the National Institute of Standards and Technology. A radio message is sent out each day from the headquarters in Ft. Collins, Colorado and corrects the time to less than one second of accuracy. For those of us who are lazy, we have clocks that project the time on the ceiling so we do not have to roll over to see the clock on the night stand. We are truly blessed.
