Hit point (hp) washing can greatly increase the survivability of characters in Maplestory, but there is a limit to how many times any class can hp wash. This limit is based on the minimum magic points (mp) a class can have. Any points added to hp after that would be considered “blood” washing. That is at least until the character’s maximum mp is above the minimum mp, and can take points out of mp again.

The actual minimum mp is dependent on the job class and level. It does not stay the same throughout a character’s career. Once a character’s max mp goes below the minimum range without equipment or hyperbody as it isn’t counted in these calculations they can not take more points out of mp, even if extra points have been invested into hp or mp.

The four equations for minimum mp are listed in the list below. It is quite possible that these equations may not apply to all regional versions of Maplestory, but it should apply to most and will be similar for all.

Bowmen, 2nd and job Thieves:

*min mp: (level x 14) + 148

*mp taken out per ap reset: 12

*hp gained per point added after a level: 16 – 20

Warriors:

*min mp: (4 x level) + 56 [fighters] (4 x level) + 156 [Spearmen/Pages]

*mp taken out per ap reset: 4

*hp gained per point added after a level: 50 – 55

2nd+ job Pirate:

*min mp: (18 x level) + 111

*mp taken out per ap reset: 16

*hp gained per point added after a level: 39 – 40 (Brawlers) 18 – 24 (Gunslingers)

Knights of Cygnus (KoCs) and currently released Legends are generally the same as their closest Adventurer counter parts for minimum mp.

Can you still HP wash successfully even if your max MP is still lower than the minimum after leveling?

Yes and no. If you have the points for it, you can try to MP wash for a point or two first then you might have enough to HP wash. This is called double washing and will be explained in more detail in another article. Otherwise no, you cannot take points out of MP until after you have more max MP than the minimum calculation. This means you can’t effectively HP wash.

For example:

* A thief had just leveled to level 50. This character had 880 mp without equipment or hyperbody.

* The minimum mp for a level 50 thief is 848 (using the equation above).

* so, 880-848 = 32 above the minimum mp

* For taking mp out with ap resets you can always round up. since each ap reset takes out 12 mp, we can divide the mp above the min by 12

* 32/12 = 2.67. Since it can be rounded up we can reset up to 3 points

* This thief has enough mp that it can add 3 points into hp and take 3 out of mp

Using the numbers above, this means 36 less mp and 48-60 more hp
