Most people are so protective of their pets; they do not want to put the care of those pets in the hands of a stranger. Even if this stranger is a professional, I for one am this type of owner, I also like to save money in any way I can. I live in the center part of Texas and I have nine full blood Pekingese dogs to care for.
Texas summers get hot extremely hot in fact too hot for a Pekingese dog with a full coat of long hair. Therefore, either I have to take my babies to a professional groomer or I had to learn how to groom them myself. I decided I would do it myself and save the grooming fees. Here is how you can groom your own Pekingese dogs.
First off you want to start this when the Pekingese are little their first summer. This way they will be used to the buzzing sound of the clippers and they will not try to eat them or be frightened. Take a favorite treat, the clippers you intend to use and the Pekingese. Set the baby and the clippers both on the table and turn the clippers on. You may need to do this a few times until the pet is comfortable with the whole situation.
While the clippers are running, feed the baby the treats and move the clippers closer and closer until you are actually touching the Pekingese with them while you are feeding the treats. The little Pekingese youngster will get used to the sound and the tickling feeling.
Once the baby is comfortable with the whole buzzing and tickling you can begin the hair cutting. Next, you will get the guide for the clippers you wish to use and attach it to them. Start at the head and face I personally use the smallest guide that comes with the kit. Gather all the hair around the ears and hold onto it as you clip the baby; leave it long this gives the Pekingese an amazing look.
They are truly cute with the long hair left only on the ears and you can leave little boots of hair on the bottoms of the Pekingese feet as well. I run over the entire face and body of the Pekingese against the way the hair grows. This gives a good close cut and you are not, having to re-cut the hair more than one time per a summer.
All of my babies are much cooler in the summer especially the three males as the males hair grows much longer than the females do. If however they are, still too hot I put them up a misting system to cool down their yard.
With plenty of shade and a nice fresh haircut, they always do fine. This keeps them comfortable and saves me a great deal of money I would have to spend each summer on a professional groomer. They are used to me handling them all and they love the cool feeling afterward. In fact, some of my babies go to sleep while I am giving them their haircuts.
