Mirroritis and the Human Craving to Look Attractive

Mirrors do strange things to people. Just the other day I saw my little 3-year old wearing my highest heels and sunglasses, her sister’s hair band and carrying my purse, staring away at her reflection in the mirror. Then she started making faces at herself. Whatever did it mean?

Most people I know simply cannot pass up a mirror, any mirror actually. Everybody has this instinctive pause and small act routine in front of a mirror – stop, reverse, check reflection, smooth hair, pat dress, maybe a twirl or grin or two and they’re off. Even Snowhite’s step mom had a mirror routine, the famous “Mirror, Mirror on the wall…” And when there were no mirrors, people made do with their reflections on water. The male of the species of course like to think that they are absolutely immune to mirroritis and this particular disease is ascribed only to women, much as a gynaecological infection. But as mentioned earlier, for every woman brushing her hair or touching up her make-up, there is a Narcissus.

In this day and age the desire to look good literally runs your life. Companies are minting millions on the promise of a better you and reputations are made on the human being’s obsessive craving to LOOK GOOD. More than half the ads on TV and newspapers are to do with products or people who can help you look good. People even want their cats and dogs to look attractive. Good grief!

So don’t be shy, go ahead, take a look, a good look, take your own sweet time in fact and only then go do whatever you were at and don’t let anybody tell you any different.
