It can be a wonderful experience teaching a child how to speak a second language. To see how the new language you teach a child can help open their malleable young intellects to an entire new way of using their expression, their perception of sounds, can be just wonderful. The first thing you need to do is to make sure that you catch ’em young. Your child’s brain around the time she is two is such a sponge soaking up all the language information it can find that this could be a great time to begin. It doesn’t matter that she hasn’t really learned her English all that well really yet. Their minds are really crying out for language at this age that she could probably handle more than two. There is an urban myth that goes around that having your children learn Spanish or French or anything else before they have a real handle on their English can impede the way they learn their first language. But not only will it not impede anything, it will actually improve how they learn English. It’s the way a child that’s really training hard at baseball will often be asked to try a bit of tennis or something to help both skills equally.
At this stage, you don’t really need to teach your child any difficult phrases or expressions in the language. All she needs is to know a few words and phrases; and since language learning takes time, you don’t need to put yourself under any pressure to come up with better instruction all the time. If you have a basic idea of how Spanish goes, you just need a good talking dictionary for your computer, and a couple phrases to learn to say the right way each time. You can pass it on to your child; and the two of you can practice with them for days.
Children learn Spanish or any other language best through song. Find a piece of music with Spanish words in it that your child could like, and you could have a grand time together singing along. Not only will this help you daughter learn to appreciate Spanish, it’ll help her learn and appreciate a new culture. That’s something that always expands a child’s mind. The child learns language the fastest when she finds herself in a place where everyone around her speaks that language. It makes the language come alive, and fuels her interest in it. Take her to a Spanish neighborhood in town, perhaps, step into a Spanish grocery store. Everything you teach her on the shelves will come alive to her. Children learn Spanish or anything else when they see a reason to learn it. Supply them with a reason, and your work is mostly done.
